What did you think, or how did you react when you first walked into Chuck E. Cheese's?

I remember it as if it was yesterday...

I got out of the car, and saw a building, with a green mouse on it (circa 1992 logo). I thought, where is my mom taking me? I walk through the door, and see a picture of a 'purple monster,'(munch 3d eyes) on the left, and a 'cool-lookin' mouse'(cec 3d eyes) on the right. Past that, the REAL excitment came...

I walk into this place and think, my mom is the GREATEST!!! How did she ever find this place? I stumbled into the arcade, looking in every corner with excitment.

as i walked into the hallwy, i noticed a bagged up area (showroom). i could see a little bit inside. i saw a stage with a blue neon light, but no character (king?). next to it, was a white 'box' (c stage) with the 'purple guy' (munch), and a 'skeleton w/ a hat and mustache (pasqually). i was kinda dissapointed i couldn't see a show, and that when 2 weeks later, i got another surprise...

2 weeks later, i got to go back. the blocked up room was now open. i sprintered in, to find for the first time, a 'late night band outside the street' (one stage mmbb, and there was a building right down the street that looked excatly like the 'clock building' in the background). i watched the show sitting on a bench for maybe 25 minutes or so. i absoultey loved it!!! the other stage w/ the neon light was gone, which got me thinking, and in its place were BIG pictures of cartoons (music parody albums), and coat racks.

As we left the 2nd time, i got a stuffed animal of the cool lookin' mouse dressed as a lion tamer ('94 cec plush w/ derby and vest), which i still ahve today. i even remember crying becasue i wanted the big one, and later in life i got one, and i remember as i left, i saw 'a doggie-sitting on a house'(beageljuice).

the next time i went, i got my pasqually plush, and hugged it while listening to "whoops there it is" (cec 20th anniversary show)

now, here's where i get a heartbreak that would scar me for life.

we've gotten news a new cec was opening by best buy (19125 w. bluemound rd; second store to get studio c alpha). i was excited, because 2 cec's would mean twice the fun, right? wrong. a couple months pass, and the new one's alomst completed. so, when we stop at mcdonald's, i ask: "hey mom, can we see how the old chuck e. cheese is doing?" without a huff, she took me and my brother down there (the ONLY time she ever did this without huffing). we're about to turn onto the street it was on. my mom looks at me, and i smile.

we turned into the parking lot of the plaza, and we get closer, and closer, and then...BOOM!!!

i look up, and what do i see? a scraped up building with newspaper in the doors, and ripped up poster frames w/ graffiti. i was devistated. i couldn't even look at it without bursting into tears. my brother and mom, on the other hand, didn't give a crap. but to me, this was my HOME.

as years pass, and we go to the elmbrook plaza, i see the empty building get older, and dumpier, and more alone. i couldn't help but go to it, look at the doors, and cry.

then, in 2001, we go back to the elmbrook plaza. i think to myself, i think i'll see if i can try and scrape the cec head off the doors (where he's in the circle). then, i saw it.

the WHOLE place was remodeled. i couldn't tell where it was. ALL new doors were added to the plaza. the poster frames were gone, the bench was gone, everything! so, all i did was sit int he car, and think of all my visits there. how i saw an mmbb for the first time, how i adorded the posters, everything.

years later, when a NEW look was given, i could then tell which building it was. i looked into the doors of an empty building, and inside i could see the bricked floor from the lobby. the torn beaglejuice poster collecting dust. even a little of the color border near the ceiling. i gasped with excitement and starred into the place. people looked at me weird, but i didn't care.

now, the NEXT time i went, it was "Dollar Deals" and still is today. i ran inside, and found the border was painted red all around. the brick floor was gone, and surprisingly the prize counter and coat racks survived. man, was i saddened. only the hallway was here. no showroom, no gameroom, nothing. just a hallway which is now dollar deals.

even though a different identity, i will neve look at that cec different then the first time i walked in.

well, that's my story. how about you?

It was late 80's, I was just a little little guy, and I had this friend who was like a 12 year old girl, for whatever reason she liked to hang out with me, and I was like 3. Anyway, her mom to us and her friends. They worked to get me all hyped up about it, "Wanna go to Chuck E. Cheese?" I had no friggin clue what they were talking about. We went and I saw video games. I was familiar with these things! I don't recall which location, but I remember getting really frustrated because I was too weak and little to actually score any points at skee ball. I wasn't enthralled by the show, I don't even recall if I saw the Walk around, but my coup de grace was the BALLS! Hundreds of them! The ball pit was where it was at for me, the end all of attractions. I could run and jump and swim into them, and I would do so until I got exhausted. I would go to the various locations in the area, holding no distinction between any of them only another handful of times throughout the rest of my childhood.
My friend Robbie had his 8th birthday party at CEC, and to this day I can't think of the location, but I try every so often. It was in a plaza mall, and I think you could walk straight from the entrance into the showroom. My thought is Lowell, but that store is so small, I recall something bigger, maybe it's just that I've grown.
Back to the story, though. At this party I had the greatest walk-around interaction ever, and it would inspire me 10 years later when I decided to apply for a job at CEC. It was circa 92-93, I think there was a porch stage, but I could be jumbling memories. Chuck came to the party and played with us all. This was tuxedo era. He even stayed out after the show started back up, and when I asked him about the other Chuck E., he just confused the hell out of me. I think we did the Chuck E. March as we followed him along and he changed the way he walked to backwards and crawling on the floor, etc. Then when cake was served, Chuck came over and picked up my fork, and started feeding it to me! He cut a little piece, I ate it, then another, I ate it, then he stabbed the fork into the whole piece and tried to feed me that! It was silly. Next thing you know it's time for Chuck to leave, and as he walks off over to his room, (which was right next to the show, more geographic hints) he accidently shut his hand in the door! Oh No! We have to go save him!! So we open the door for poor chuck and take a quick peek inside the dark costume room. I remember seeing a head on a shelf that I thought looked like Donald Duck (must have been Helen). After the table time we're playing games, I've gotten much better at skee ball, and Chuck E. comes back out to play! He took one of my skee balls, then climbed the machine and plopped it into the top scoring slot... This was the COOLEST thing EVER!! I got some cool prizes that night, like a plastic cup (15th anniversary maybe? Was there such a thing?) And Robbie got an I heart Chuck E. Cheese bumper sticker.
Even though it wasn't my first visit, this one stands out in my mind as the single greatest time I ever had a Chuck E. Cheese's. Thank you so much to whoever was in the suit that night, whatever store it was, it's because of you that I started with such a great company, and turned it into a career.
(PS, the tickets were purple, no?)

God this place has really gone to hell... J/K... Actually I had not been in a CEC in many years. I thought they were all gone because all our PTTs had closed around 84 and all that was left near me was Showbiz. I thought CEC was back for the first time in years and I was thrilled. I was in highschool and went to the Lewisville Tx store and saw the 2 stage show. I was really happy to see cyberamic style robots. I wasn't surprised to see they had curtains and were now retrofitted with legs to be more Rock-afire like. The Helen Henny walk around was out. For a little while I thought they had gone back to the guest concept and this was a new character until I heard her addressed as Helen Henny in the show tape. I thought she was a duck. To me it was interesting that they had really revamped a classic character to the extent they did. The down side of this visit was the staff and manager were really rude and made my friend and I feel unwelcomed since we did not have kids with us. I was a paying customer. I ordered a pizza and was watching the show minding my own business. The way the staff acted turned me off to go back for 5 or 6 years.

CEC going down hill from what it was dates back to the dying days of PTT. Here are a list of major events that I feel have taken away from the whole concept (roughly in order):

1) Guest stars being retired
2) Losing the Warblettes, flags, band board and clappers
3) Loss of Munch's Mad House
4) Retiring caberet acts
6)The addition of video monitors to the show
7)Knocking the walls out and making the restaurant one huge room
8) The introduction of Studio C

Your absolutley right, captslappy. I agree with you 100% about CEC's downhill. Perhaps they may have had guest stars for a little longer, because everybody has a different favorite character.(my fav. guest star is Harmony)

I think anyone that grew up with PTT and got to see the guest stars of the early 80s like Harmony best. I have yet to meet anyone that actually got to see Sally or Foxy. I was in kindergarten in 1980 when I saw Harmony and went to PTT the first time. I think youthening Helen was a good move since she was the one they stuck with when PTT became CEC. Although she uses the same name and both are chickens, I'd almost consider today's modern Helen a totally seperate new character from the Broadway Helen of the 80s. Helen did have another look in the late 70s when she was first introduced. I really think that by having different caberet and lounge shows at different stores and changing the guest out that PTT/CEC kept things fresh and new. I don't believe a show has CEC changed the look and personality of Helen Henny for the MMBB. I think the last time a character was truly changed out was 83 or 84 when Helen was first reintroduced and Showbiz brought in the Statue of Liberty in place of Rolfe and Earl in 86.

My first experience was in Natick, MA (I think). The only thing I remember was that it was in the 1990's (or when they had "Don't Stop Thinking About Tomorrow"). I also remember being intimidated by the show (although it was my favorite part, I never was good with games, and the prizes were, of course, junk).
Fast forward a few years later, a short visit to West Rox and I find the show room somewhat blocked off! (I think it was near closing time and the place looked horrendous, I shudder at the thought of seeing the show with the condition of its room.)
My first visit to Union was in December '01 (But we couldn't get a table>: >: >: ) My next visit, January '02, and I found a fun game called Sonic Championship based of the "blue blur" and his "friends". It was a fun game, but it was pulled (>: >: >: >: >: ) during the renovation.

(I'd tell you about my first Studio C, but that's another story.)
