Early morning explosion rocks Danvers
Staff Report
Eagle-Tribune
DANVERS - A massive explosion at 2:50 a.m. today rocked much of the city, waking many out of a sound sleep.
Early reports centered on an explosion at a propane facility on Water Street. Buildings nearby were heavily damaged and a fire was raging. Injuries were reported, but none had been confirmed as of press time.
Three Danvers ladder trucks were on the scene, and agents from the Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms Bureau were searching for the cause of the explosion.
A Danvers fire department dispatcher said the cause of the explosion was still unknown at 3:45 a.m. A police department dispatcher confirmed the explosion was in the area of Endicott and Water Streets, but also said the cause was unknown.
Bruce Amaro, who lives on Water Street in the old part of Danvers, said all was quiet when an explosion rattled the neighborhood.
"The whole house just shook," he said. "There was an enormous set of flames. I could see it from 400 yards away, then I heard the sirens from the fire department. It's frightening."
Others in the Essex County community were also awaken from a sound sleep.
"It shook the whole house," said Matt Ouellette, who lives at 3 Hampshire St.

Hi Gang.
Thanks for your concern!
I'm ok....and Kerry and i had a chat last night on the phone. The area of Danvers is pretty much totalled where the explosion happened. I'm talking totally LEVELED. The "famous" CEC is fine though...it is well protected actually in regards to where the explosion happened.
It was a paint chemical plant that went "boom" around 2 am yesterday morn. When i arrived at work ( in Peabody..down the road from Shiney Happy Danvers) there were 4 helicopters circling the place. Not the most welcome way to start a workday....
Amazingly, NO ONE was killed or seriously injured which is next to a miracle since this happened in a residential area and everyone was home in bed! You should have seen the pix in the local papers....looks like 9/11 man. All the light fixures were crooked in the mall and had to be adjusted before opening. The shock wave from the blast knocked things around pretty good, but i slept through the whole thing like a rock. Dang it!
I am very happy no one was badly hurt, but hundreds lost there homes in the area, either totally ( as in leveled) or as they knew it ( heavy damage).
So don't worry...Danvers CEC cannot be toppled even by a mega-ton explosion! Ha ha!
IT"S IMMORTAL!!!
AHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

1st... how did this topic make it under "special events"!?:rollin
I went to Danvers Tues and found out that most of the ceiling tiles had been sucked up into the ceiling when the blast hit(due to the suction the blast made going over the top of the building) and they lost quite a few lights. Everything else was ok. I did learn that our Tech Vinnie, lived on that street and hi house was one of the badly damaged ones.
I drove thru there yesterday, and it is REALLY BAD. Lots andlots of badly damaged houses and houses up to a mile away with boarded up windows. Pray for the familys, that they can and will get thru this, especially this time of year.

Well said Munch....
It really does seem that right around the holidays some horrible tragety happens to screw up people's season. I feel bad for the poor folks who are now having to deal with the loos of their home and most of their belongings this X-mas. It sucks!!
Hopefully things will be getting better soon. The traffic in the afternoon near where i work ( right next door practically to Danvers) still gets pretty nasty with some roads still closed off.
Man, the Showroom Ghost must have jumped a mile when the explosion went off...and hit his head on the ceiling tiles! Ha !

Oops....I just realised its not under special events, but, off topic..My bad!
Ya, the showroom ghost had lots of fun that night...who knows mabey it scared the ghost away!
I cant believe the devistation I saw when I drove thru there. It shook Cheryl and I out of bed that night(we live about 2 miles away) and It really shook the house and woke us both up.
There is a fund set up at a local bank if anyone wants to donate to the folks. Some will never return to their house due to the fact the house is unstable and will have to be demolished.
