I was recently looking through microfilmed newspapers on Google News Archive and discovered in the May 1983 Youngstown Vindicator Sunday comics 2 ads from 1983 promotiing the CECPTT hand puppets of Chuck E. Cheese, Mr. Munch, and The King plus a puppet theatre to go with the 3 hand puppets for a special price. Have you noticed this ad if you went to Google News Archive and browsed through the newspapers online? Sorry I couldn't print or save the ads from the News Archive.

I've never heard of that.. It's not listed on the collectables page- must be pretty rare.

It must be for the generic "sock" puppets they released (similar to the cheap vinyl/plastic ones you used to be able to get from McDonald's in the 1980s - kind of like sticking your hand in a ziplock bag). The PTT ones were made of cloth though. That's the only King puppet I'm aware of. Had no idea there were others - or a stage for that matter.

Maybe the ad features prototypes that never went into production?

I looked through and couldn't find the ad. What day was the newspaper?

I saw the ad in a few May 1983 or June 1983 Sundays of the Youngstown Vindicator newspaper - The ads for the CECPTT puppets are in the Sunday comics pages of the Vindicator newspaper.

----------

Clarification: The March 27, 1983 Youngstown Vindicator Sunday comics (from the newspaper at Google News Archive) has the CECPTT hand puppet ad in it.

Other than the King, are any more of these puppets in possession of a collector?

It's possible that the King might be the only puppet that exists. The other two (and the stage) might never have been produced.

It's possible that they were never produced, but it seems more likely to me that there just aren't any left. If the stage was something you could buy for 2 bucks with a pitcher of coke or get free after you collect 3 puppets it must not have had much substance. And, given the options, why would they produce only the King? He's not a flagship character.

Because The King is awesome, that's why. :) heh. I like the artwork they used for the puppet- would have been nice to see more King artwork on stuff.

The King grew to be the second most popular character in the chain and the second most important. Initially it seemed the #2 character was Crusty, then became Dolli Dimples as for about 5 years she was used as the girl character on things (and was the female characters on the girl's bathroom) and then King rose in popularity and he seemed to be the second most important character until Helen became a permanent cast member and they redid her during CU. I'm surprised on the puppets that they chose Munch over Jasper. I always liked Mr. Munch better than Jasper but Jasper was always Chuck's right hand man after Crusty went away.

I'm going to assume King was so popular because Elvis himself was/is so popular (and at the time they were still using Elvis' songs on the showtapes).

I really dig Dolli, though- I like her just as much as The King. She's just a fun character. I wish she'd lasted longer.

But the CECPTT hand puppet ad was a promotion at a CECPTT in Youngstown, Ohio (Presidential Square), so the Chuck E. and Munch hand puppets may be rare as well as the CECPTT puppet stage.

Uh; yeah, that would be what we're talking about. Maybe they exist, maybe they don't. But odds are; none of them survive anymore because they were so cheap and easy to lose or throw away. We're jsut talking about plastic baggies; after all. I imagine the "stage" was cardboard.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread so far, I also was unaware of any Pizza Time Theatre puppets other than The King!

The fact that the Mr. Munch puppet says that he's the "Puppet of the Week" makes me wonder if this was{or was intended to be} a weekly promotion, one that would've featured all of the main cast/lounge characters eventually.

This would appear to be the closest that PTT came to the McDonaldland figures/playset that Remco{and later Huckleberry} Toys produced{in the late 70s, and mid-2000s} for Mickey-D's.

Its pretty unfortunate that these items seem so uncommon/may not have even been made!

The fact that they were made of cloth{and not plastic/vinyl} reasons that there may very well be some out there still.

I fondly recall those McDonald's puppets{and thought that the Chuck E. bibs now at CEC were a modern-day version at first, oddly enough}.

D.S.C.: This CECPTT puppet promotion was a 3 week promotion with a different puppet each week.

I have a Jasper hand puppet that looks like a plush. It's not a crappy mitten with the picture of him, it is an actual puppet where you stick your hand up his butt to make him move. It's on the shelf with my plushes.

LOL wow... all those poor Jasper puppets out there being violated. Quick, someone get one for Dani(kidding)

But yeah same here, a Jasper and a Chuck puppet from PTT. For some reason they made all of these Chuck puppets with burgundy red noses... At first I thought mine was just a goof or faded over time but I've seen about 5 of these already and they're all that same burgundy red color. :-/

Looks like in addition to his cigar habit; Chuck E. has a bit of a drinking problem.
