ANYBODY REMEMBER THE DART REGISTERS THAT HAD THAT SILVER RECIEPT TAPE I THOUGHT THAT SILVER RECIEPT TAPE WAS COOL. ALSO DO YOU REMEMBER THAT CASHIERS HAD TO COUNT OUT THE GUESTS TOKENS BY HAND BEFORE THE HOPPERS WERE INVENTED AND INSTALLED. I WONDER IF THEY EVER COUNTED THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF TOKENS OUT TO THE GUEST EACH AND EVERY TIME.... HMM THAT GIVES ME AN IDEA FOR A CONTEST. ONE DAY EVERY LOCATION IN OUR DISTRICT SHOULD DISCONNECT THE HOPPERS AND SEE HOW MANY COMPLAINTS THEY GET.. LOL JUST KIDDING!!!!! :rollin

Yeah, and also you had to put your tickets on this "frying pan" type of thing that was on the counters. And then it would like count all of your tix.

tHE DART REGISTER WAS AN ORANGE TYPE REGISTER AND IT HAD A KEY IN THE SIDE AND HAD RUBBER KEYS THAT HAD THE ITEMS ON IT. NOTHING LIKE THE REGISTERS NOW DAYS.
HEY CEC3066 NO I WON'T SUGGEST HAVING CASHIERS COUNT OUT TOKENS TO THE GUESTS UNLESS THE HOPPERS BREAK OF COURSE! IT WAS GOOFY IDEA!!!!

I remember those...we had them here still in '94 and I still have the silver reciept I got from buying my Pasqually doll. It's really faded now but the paper's still silver.

stores either used Dart of Fasfax. You can see a new verision of the Fasfax registers at Whataburger now. Yea, we had to cound out the tokens for the guest, there was really no way for mgmt to know how many were given out on Fasfax and Dart would display the amount on reg receipt. Tickets were hand counted and placed in a trash can...life was so primative then.

The DART registers were cool. All those buttons. And the receipts were cool - more interesting than FasFax! If you looked close you could see the sparks that were hitting the paper to make the letters/numbers.
BUT... the thing that was annoying is once you pressed "TOTAL" you could no longer make any changes to the ticket. If the guest changed their mind you had to go ahead and press "AMT Tendered" and then have the manager do an "overring" for that ticket and run into the kitchen and grab the ticket that was coming out (yes, I would forget that part, and there would be extra pizzas coming out.)
AND - credit cards - had that manual swipe thing that makes an impression of the credit card. No debit cards accepted back then.
So who knows what DART stands for?

Too funny.....
I remember these silver reciepts well. I had to literally wallow through a gigantic pile of them when i cleaned up a little in the upstairs atticspace at my old store. We have paperwork up there going back to the late 80's still...87/88' or so. There were some interesting things i discovered, on of which being these strange silver register reciepts.
J worked at the store at the time these were being used....i know as i found many of them stapled to ancient Birthday Order Cards signed by him or his wife-to-be Cheryl! I remember giving some of these to him and it made his day. He may be able to tell us more about these DART registers from personal experience.
Anyway..back on topic. It's interesting to learn about the machines that used these.
And now about the token despensers...PTT did have mechanical Token Machines ( as they were called) that despensed tokens in pre-determined amounts. These were discontinued in the late 80's, so after that point everything had to be hand counted and put into cups of Token Holders for immediate sale. There is a excellent photo of one in the Collectibles section...check it out!
Back in the early days though...we had the Token Machines. These were large box-like machines that sat on the front counter. Inside was a large angled plastic tube that held all the tokens. To fill the machine, a key opened the top hatch. To dispense the coins during sales, the cashier would note the number of tokens being purchased or being given out for coupons, food purchases, etc. You would then push one of several small buttons located on the TM's back. The 1st button would dispense only one coin. 2nd, 5 coins, 3rd, 7-10 coins. 4th would dispense another odd-numbered amount and the 5th button ( known to me personally as the "Purge Button") would dispense every single coin until the machine was empty. A old school rolling numer counter was also located on the machines back, opposite the dispensing buttons so you ould keep track of what was being consumed.
These machines were very cool....and they ran entirely seperate from the register system. These could be set up anywhere to dispense coins....not like the systems later on that were hooked into the electronics system and despensed coins automatically. They were very neat and definately very retro PTT.
I have a Token Machine and it's quite a thing. Unfortunely i lost the key to the top hatch so i am no longer able to load coins in it but its still a gem. Weighs a ton though...and that's with no coins! I remember a while back i tried firing it up but could'nt get the little motor inside to turn. Old age may have finally krept up on this blast from the past...:(

jenn, pictures??? :P
put your tickets on this "frying pan"
i remember before that when you just had to count them. lakewood, ca used to have a row of like 10 tickets taped to the counter. and they would just break your tickets up into 10s to count them.
hand counted and put into cups of Token Holders
i dont remember token holders back then. i always thought that was more recent (90s). i think the receipts still say "Bag of Gold" when you buy $5 worth of tokens. back when i was younger, i remember that when you asked for a bag of gold, you would actually receive a little brown cloth bag that had chuck e cheese on the front. the bags had a small yellow draw string on them. when you opened it up, there would be $5 worth of tokens pre-counted and put in the bag. i dont know if you guys remember these. new cast members like to ask me random questions to solve cec mysteries. and the "why does it say 'bag of gold' for $5 in tokens?" question comes up a lot :P

Yes Cali...that is one of the Token Machines from 1981. These were used until 1986 or so..at least in these parts.
Token Holders now.....these were first issued as a Merch prize as far back as 1986 or so. I still have some of them in my collection...they all featured a Classic Rat image on it and came in a variety of colors. I remember J giving these to me one night when i visited way back to photo the Show.....they were the coolest things ever at the time and SO handy too! In the mid-90's the image of Chuck E. was updated to his "Coach" look and later still we had several "Modern" version right up to the present day.
