I don't know what got me thinking about Chuck E. Cheese/Showbiz Pizza over the weekend, because I hadn't thought about my love for it in literally 10+ years, but for some reason I started reading up on the history of it and all these memories came flooding back. (Aided by the Rock-afire Explosion movie trailer and all of Chris Thrash's videos.)

I grew up "going" to the Showbiz/CEC in Laurel, MD, which as I understand it is still a three-stage show. I can't imagine that they've taken good care of it because the shopping center it's in is generally pretty crappy, but I'd love to know if anyone has been lately.

Anyways, I put "going" in quotes because I only ever actually made it to Showbiz/CEC maybe 5 times in my life because my dad hated it so much. More than anything I just remember constantly bugging him to go there from ages 4 to 10, give or take. I used to watch TONS of Nickelodeon and CEC constantly advertised on Nick, so it was always fresh in my mind and I was always being reminded how awesome it was.

One of the funnier things I remember is that I asked my dad once when I was REAL little if we could go Chuck E. Cheese, and he said "We don't have a Chuck E. Cheese. It's Showbiz." And I was all disappointed because CEC was what advertised all the time and I felt that somehow it was better than SPP. Then when I was maybe 5 or 6 it changed over to CEC and the inside didn't change AT ALL, but somehow it was cooler in my mind. (I do remember thinking the walkaround Chuck was the coolest, so that was added with the change-over.) Also whenever I went, I barely paid any attention to the Rock-afire show and always wanted to go straight to the ball pit and then to the games so I could win tickets for useless/cheap prizes. Thinking back on it now, I wish I would have seen more of the RAE, because that was way more unique than the ball pits, skee-ball or Super Shot basketball. Don't get me wrong, I definitely watched them because they were right in the room where you ate your pizza, but it wasn't the big draw for me. So it's kind of odd that THAT's what I'm really interested in now that I look back on it.

So that's my life story. I've been reading the forums and combing over this site for the last few days and I finally got up the gumption to register and post. This is probably the longest-winded I'll ever be, so thanks for reading all that if you've made it this far.

Thanks for sharing your story!

Let me tell you first hand that getting to know this hobby as an "adult" fan isn't such a bad thing. I really loved the Rock-afire as a kid, but my memory was that of a typical 6 year old. After 20 years it was mostly comprised of feelings and a few scattered images. Just about everything I know about either CEC or the RAE was learned over the past decade. I think I really loved it as a kid, but have a far stronger appreciation of it now.

Welcome to the forums too!

Yeah I think most of us 'old farts' who come on this board now who grew up with CEC/SPP/PTT probably never really paid a huge amount of attention to the show, other than while we were eating or if they had a song we particularily liked... and spent most of our time there playing games or playing in the tubes or ball pit or whatever... and NOW that we're older NOW we're interested in the show and the technical marvels they were and with the whole history of PTT/SPP/CEC we're getting more invested in it and waxing nostalgic, especially since so much has changed (and I suppose not for the better, at least to some people ;) ) so we're even MORE nostalgic about it.

I tell ya, be awesome if someone would have the balls to find/dig out old PTT/SPP stuff and refit it into a more 'modern' CEC... and see what the reactions would be.

Do they still franchize stores or are most corporate owned? It would be awesome but I couldn't see it happening because most of the old stuff has vanished only to surface every now and again. I don't think it'd be the same since it would be trying to recreate it from memories at best that are vague... memories are tricky! however if someone was to do it, it could possibly have corporate rethink things and bring back the ptt/spp we know and love. we can dream but our best bet is to road trip to spz for something of an experience like that or see some of the old porch rocker stages that still exist in a few places.

The Laural Maryland store is a true treasure. The show there really is in stellar condition. I reccomend it to anybody.

We in Maryland are lucky, as a lot of the shows here are in great condition. Here's a little list of stores with great shows to help you out as you rekindle your fandom:

Largo, MD-Studio C Beta- GREAT condition!
Laurel-I already mentioned.
Waldorf MD-Studio C Alpha- GREAT condition!

Most of the other stores have 2-Stages or 1-Stages

I thought the Simi Valley one was the last one of this sort(with waving flags to boot) but went out a year ago?

Man I'd love to keep hope alive that there is *some* sort of older styled CEC in operation *somewhere*. I was hoping there'd be one in southern california still.

That's awesome. I may have to swing by and take a peek at the Laurel store next time I'm at my parents' house. Do you know which show setup they have?
