I wanted to say how overjoyed I am to have discovered this site. I should say RE-discovered, as I first ran across Vega's site in mid 2000 but sadly it took about a decade for me to decide to sign up.
The reason I say overjoyed, as it just blows me away that there is such a loving connected fandom surrounding ShowBiz and Chuck E Cheese, as well as animatronic eateries in general.

My memories of growing up in the early to late 1980's are so strong, and CEC and ShowBiz are a big part of that. I grew up in Northern California, but I swear I must have visited countless PTT's in that time, from Sacramento, Fairfield and Modesto to Oxnard, Northridge and in between.

The main memory that sticks out for me, is how dark Pizza Time Theater was(which was awesome), and the animal paws that came out of the wall and moving flags. I LOVED that. And of course the cabaret styled animatronic show itself, as well as the side cabaret shows(Dolly, King, Beagles, etc) Oh! And then the tiny hidden rooms with crazy strobe lights, and then the big cheese mazes you crawled through. And back then it was a big deal with the main show came on, like you just knew it was show time. I loved how it was totally dark, and you immersed in it...the spotlight would shine on Chuck, then Helen, Jasper, Pasqually, then randomly the Warblottes. I ALWAYS wished they had come out with a foldout playset of that, that had the flags/animal paws in the wall, the warblettes and main band and stuff.

*sigh* I feel sad kids since the 1990's makeover will never get to experience. In the spring of 1993 ALL Chuck E Cheese's PTT got remodled into the look they have now. (I wonder if there's any old school ones left?)

And Showbiz, wow. I remember trying to win Fatz and Billy Bob pvcs, bying a Dook doll that I took to school. I was sad when they phased those out.
As a huge huge Jim Henson and Muppet fan, I loved how a lot of aspects of it(like Looney Bird) reminded me of that kind of magic. Anyways, I recently saw on some big movie news site the trailer for The Rock-afire Explosion and I bout fell out my chair. I just couldn't believe a full length theatrical serious documentary had been about the life and times, legacy and fandom of Showbiz. I wish I still had some of that Showbiz merchandise.

I saw on another thread how Chris was able to bring back Showbiz, which is crazy awesome. That's like the ultimate fandom, and it's so cool how supportive and upbeat Aaron is to this day. I think it really sucks how he got screwed out of Wac A Mole and the eventual decision to fold Showbiz after they took over CEC. But like a Phoenix rising, sometimes it takes the fans to help shape new directions. In Muppet fandom(like on MuppetCentral.com), the Muppet writers come by and genuinely listen to fans ideas. And I like that.

I noticed too Cheesevention was in San Jose in 2007, which I totally could have gone too. I never got to go to that three story CEC, nor the original CEC.

Sorry for the rambling, it's just good to be able to share my lifelong love of this stuff without being laughed at:)

Btw, anyone remember the Chuck E Cheese movie they came out with on vhs, or the Chuck E Cheese comic book from 1996?

HI their Cory. Always glad to hear someone's showbiz/CEC memories. I had Showbiz Pizza Place in my area. Never a CEC PTT in my area. I remember those RAE dolls you speak off. I personally own a few of them. I used to have a dook and fatz doll. small versions of those two showbiz pizza place characters. I do own a small mitzi doll, small and larg Billy Bob doll. And a large Beach bear doll. oh yeah I used to own a small beach bear doll too. Unfortuantly those 3 RAE character's went lost. And were never ever recovered again. I'm a very sentimental person too myself. I own a clear glass Mitzi mug, and a small white billy bob mug. I have some RAE records too. I have some colander head night 8X10 glossy photos of Fatz and Dook. I have some rae homely for christmas cassette tapes. never played them much during christmas time. I have some billy bob artwork. And sticker to of him. I remember being afraid of fatz, and rolfe dewolfe. lol. the walkaround billy bob I was afraid of too. Funny how I would stand next to the Mitzi Mozzerella character thinking that she would save me from the rest of the RAE band member's lol. By the early 90's then our Showbiz Pizza Place store got converted to what was known as Chuck E. Cheese's Pizza. Now it's known as Chuck E. Cheese's. When I seen art images of the Helen Henny character. I knew right away I'd love her more then the Mitzi Mozzerella character.
so even though I do own a nice porition of Showbiz Pizza Place stuff. I do own quite alot more of Chuck E. Cheese's items. Our Chuck E. Cheese's store used to have a Jasper and Mr. Munch walkaround costume. I was petrified of the Mr. Munch walkaround character. So I'd always request for the Jasper character to come out on the floor instead of Mr. Munch lol. My bed is literally loaded down with Helen Henny plush dolls.lol:x I own some CEC poster's when I went to my very first Chuck E. Cheese's/PTT/SPP Fan Convention. My favorite band member out of the CEC/MMBB gang would be the lovely Miss HELEN HENNY CHICK A DEEE CHARACTER! So glad there's more SPP/PTT/CEC fan's out there to share alot of memories with.:D

Yo, wassup? ^_^ Welcome to the boards, here! ^_^ Pretty awesome place, eh? ^_^

And I'm glad to finally hear someone mention how dark the Pizza Time Theatre was back in the day. I distinctly remembered that, too; I was beginning to wonder if it was just my imagination or not. *^^*;

Welcome to the board! Yeah shocking that is probably been many years since some of us 20 somethings used to go to a CECPTT or Showbiz that we're kinda finding out about this at the same time. My local CECPTT was my regular birthday/special occassion/reward place. I think most of my birthdays from like maybe my second onwards to my 13th were spent there. Same with my cousins' birthdays.

Had fond memories of playing games there for hours, being scared out of my wits over that freaky cheese factory maze too! And yep that showroom was nice and dark (but they still had some low lights on and foot lights for safety of course) and really enhanced the 'show' experience. Not like these days when the show room is as brightly lit as the rest of the place.

I liked it dark. Bright lights aggravated my seizures I had when I was young. After years of medications, bright lights now aggravate my migraines. >_>

As much as I like Showbiz over CEC, I wish I could see an old-school PTT, again. I'd love to see an old-school Showbiz more, but still, just for nostalgia's sake, a PTT would be good to see, too, flags and all. ^_^

It's bizarre, reading your guy's memories of old CEC/Showbiz, its like I can strongly and vividly remember the smells of those places, the sights and sounds. Its weird.

YES! Oh my goodness, if I was rich I would totally try and recreate that style. Or invent a time machine. Im so glad you remember that time!

Im so sorry you've been having to deal with that:( Yeah every darn store I go to, be it Walmart or Target, or yeah even CEC its insanely bright. Like I get why Apple looks like a white room scene out of THX-1138 or the Matrix
but man. I feel relaxed when a restaurant is dimly lit.

You know, I know it sounds messed up now...but I loved being like 5-9, and getting dropped off at CEC all day. Its illegal now, but back then myself and lots of kids got dropped off at CEC for long stretches.

Thanks! It is quite awesome. I actually don't feel embarassed proclaiming love for children's family animatronic eateries.

Yeah when I think Chuck E Cheese, I don't think of the bright stripped down
husk/Studio C "CEC" that exist now.

I think of walking through doors and seeing red and then the big CEC ticket redemption counter. I loved how dimly lit it was, like being in a dark movie theater. The mystery and magic of running around with other kids. Climbing through bizarre mazes, going into tiny rooms with strobe lights. Playing Spy Hunter and Sinistar.

Noone I know remembers this, but I remember a smaller room with the Hippo lady, and then the main room where the CEC guys were up high with red curtains on the side. It reminded me of the Muppet Show backstage area.
I remember animatronic flags which were quirky, and then like ever so often
these animal arms would come out of the wall near where you ate, and it was like "whoah?". I swear, at the time I thought how rad it'd be if they had made a playset of that.

In my city there was in the early to mid 80's three Pizza Time Theatres. One was a narrow small one in a strip mall, one actually was laid out like modern CEC, and then the really cool dark cabaret one I was mentioning earlier.

Doesnt it bug you guys that CEC corporate has all but dropped the focus on the other characters, as well as animatronics *and* introducing new characters? I remember Pasqually, Jasper, Helen and Munch plushes and figures at CEC all through the 1990's.

It greatly bugs me how light CEC is. If any of you saw the Vince Vaugh/Jon Favreau film "Made", the CEC in the ending or the CEC used in that 1999 Chuck E Cheese movie is how most of em look. There's a new little CEC near me, its so bright plus with the glare.

I ALSO remember when CEC got new games in constantly. Now days you have a broken Turtles in Time and Simpsons game, gosh awful ticket redemption machines and a broken Jurassic Park.

Aw! That's it. And soon there will be The Rock-afire movie dvd to go with it:)

And yeah if I recall, the 1996 one off comic had better art than what was in the two CEC mini zines from a few years prior.

Ack, now that I think back, that CEC movie was mindnumbingly bad. I think the whole thing is on youtube.

It took me awhile to realize, but modern Helen seems like a ripoff of Mitzi.
Oh goodness, I LOVED Munch and Fatz. I just love out there characters.
I got the chuck/pasq/jasper/helen/munch pvcs, but I wished they had come out with figures of *all* the characters.

You know its funny, I had no idea Showbiz was a rival company. I literally thought it was just a brand extention of CEC. In 1984 the main CEC(I guess in retrospect they were called "Pizza Time Theater" which I forgot) I went to got converted to Showbiz. The 3 stage thing was just wild. Even as a kid I could tell it was much more advanced mechanics. I wish they had come out with figures of all the guys, but I forgot they had had dolls of a lot of the characters.

It's great to have such a passionate fan join the community. The comics you speak of can actually be found on the Showbiz site in PDF format. They're great quality. Pretty much all of us here miss the dimly lit showroom setting, because now, it's blindingly bright and doesn't give a show vibe off at all. I like it pitch black, man!

As for Galaxy 5000, it's indeed on YouTube, the whole thing and the funny thing is, it's one of the only hour-long videos left...in fact it may be the only one.

I really wish I did. I've gotten a number of pms/emails asking me if I have
any photos or home videos of my times at early to late 80's PTT's in southern california, bay area and northern california(Sacramento, Fairfield, etc) I seriously wish I did. I looked through all the PTT galleries on this site, and I just didnt see that much of the California style. I remember in 1980-1981 when I lived in Canoga Park/Northridge going to a couple really neat ones. Then all throught the 80's all these random family trips, we'd make stops at many PTT along the way(as a caveat, many "CEC" were still technically PTT in style/look as the name change was not comesmtic until 1993)

I particularly liked the Fairfield one for some reason. I remember it had "The King" for an awfully long time. I think my favorite was the one here in Sacramento. There was a very small, strip mall dark as can be/balcony/cabaret side room CEC, then a CEC that was Showbiz 84-88, then a big PTT theater that you can see here:
http://www.showbizpizza.com/photos/ptt/ca_sacramento/index.html
Sadly this person didnt get photos of the balcony theater or anything. This place had the clapper animals, waving flags, theater balcony, King, etc all the way til the spring of 1993.

So sorry man, even I would love to see more photos of California 80's CEC's.

I'm curious from what you can glean, what were the last PTT looking/feeling CEC's to stay before being converted or demolished? As seeing photos of the Simi Valley one circa 2007, it had a late 80's feel to it. And it looks like the Utah one kept the 70's style portraits until the 90's.

Utah did finally convert to the C stage porch back in I think '90. there was a CEC in Lake Forest that had the Balcony stage right up to it's closing (i think it was '02 when it closed

Whoah, you saying there was a Balcony show that existed in this decade?
I wish there were pictures of these. It just doesn't seem like there's much PTT era photos online.

Yeah that's kind of a shame isn't it? Although I think part of the reason is the same reason I don't have a whole lot of pictures - that I know of - is because given the somewhat controlled chaos of a CEC/PTT/SPP parents didn't bring 'good' cameras. Second, in this age of digital cameras we can take 1000s of pics, back in the 80s, you maybe shot a roll or two and that was it or even a few pictures period. And the majority of the shots were of the kids opening presents, playing on something or maaaaybe getting up close to the stages, but I know from experience I played the games, sure I watched the shows but I went to play LOL. Parents stayed in the showroom or table talking, eating and heh in my mom's case, getting in a little studying here and there if it was getting close to an exam. LOL

But I'm sure as those of us kids from the 80s grow up and start exploring our parents houses and such, we'll find those pictures... eventually.

Ha, this sounds bad...but I openly admit my folks and I never got any food during the entire time of the early to late 80's we went to PTT and Showbiz. I think the most I ever spent at one time there was a couple dollars worth of tokens(and boy did I learn how to make that stretch) and a Dook doll I once got. Aw, growing up super foodstamp/welfare poor in the 1980's. You gotta love it.

Yeah I can't recall a single time I ever had a camera in CEC, not until I had my 22nd and 27th birthdays there:) Im happy there's some PTT era home videos on youtube though.

Yeah! Gotta love YouTube. Although I wonder if my uncle's ex-fiance would have any old pics of us she took at CEC, if she's still got them. I know she used to always bring a video camera or SLR camera to stuff like birthdays and other family events. She was cool, my cousins and I all loved her.

I guess since I've been a photo finisher and gotten into Photography now I wish I had taken pictures of more things or that others took more, but hey at the time we had no concept of 'take pictures of this, who knows how they'll douche it up in the future!' That a decade or more down the road we'll be joining an online group of people who long for the fun places of our youth.

Man, I kind of wish I had made another account on here. In summer of 2000 I found rockafire.tripod, fell in love with it and registered. But it said I wasnt approved or something, so I thought "aww, must be some super secret club" I think I checked it a couple times over the years(coincidentally a week after I realized I was *in* San Jose at the same time Cheesevention was going on and I didnt even know it) and after seeing that Rockafire movie trailer I was all "ok, I gotta see if there's other diehard CEC/PTT/RAE/SB fans who still post".

Sad thing further is...as much as my friends know Im a big anime, sci fi, comic book, muppet/jim henson nerd...my lifelong love of all things CEC/Showbiz related has been kept secret. I think because of how untangibly obscure and silly it would seem to people. "um, you mean that place parents take their screaming kids?". People see this garish, bright
pit of mayhem...not knowing the full rich history of Nolan Bushnell, Aaron Fechter , Pizza time Theater and the PT players, the rockafire explosion, etc. I dont care for Disney much, modern Nickelodeon, Warner Bros Looney Tunes, etc...yet for some reason, PTT/CEC/RAE and everything associated with it has always had a magical feeling to me...and were talking companies that hardly have any characters. I think it also has to do with the fact, unlike Disneyland, you could go regularly to this place that was just alive with awesomeness, and felt interative. total immersion. Be it balcony era PTT or Showbiz RAE.

Im curious, what setup do you recall in Wisconsin, and what do they have now? For me it was 3 CEC: small but dark pizza time theater with cabaret side room, big CEC that was kind of bare that soon got turned into a showbiz with RAE for most the 80's, and then a big PTT with all the works.
Now one is completely gone, the Showbiz is now your typical CEC(tho still with the MMBB), a new but tiny studio c CEC store, and another Munch Make Believe 5 piece but with the usual bright annoying modern look.

NickRyder

Well the one I went to was actually a fair largish (at least to me) store, next to a K-Mart, same one MMBBFan used to go to too, had the King, I think some of the side cabarets, was nice and dark in the showroom, was balcony but now its the MMBB setup, but supposedly the bots are the original balcony ones (I think - MMBBFan can you confirm this?) just refit a bit and the usual bright garish modern look now. Can barely stand it now really, went there a while back to get a Calzone for my mom and found out that they stopped selling them. Boo. They rocked!

I wish I had joined the forums sooner and posted a thread in 2000-2002 asking for a list of all "PTT/Porch/early to late 80's" styled CEC stores(which would all be franchises, or "rogue" franchises as they call em) Those ones usually get demolished sadly(the post millennial franchise CEC's)

I'd like to see CEC get back to being creative, but I understand they have their quaterly reports to think about. I just wonder, if those might not
be improved if they did a few new things:

1. Introducing new characters. It worked for Sesame Street. Sesame Workshop languished in the 80's...but they introduce Elmo, Zoe, Rosita and Abby Cadabby, and their popularity skyrockets even further.
I'm not sure tho, that kids even think of the CEC gang as noteworthy or like how someone would view Donald and Goofy. To me they are my donald and goofy.

2. Creating an extention or new brand, even just a test market, to attract older clientelle or different theme. And I dont mean their TGI Fridays attempt(TJ Hartfords), but have a test restaurant that has a more elaborate theme. Maybe a dark jungle, very atmospheric...almost like out of Disneyland. It could have a sports bar, lounge, small amusement rides, and have exciting new animatronics.

3. MORE partnering. Have an animated CEC segment on network tv or cable, have alternative/collector brands in Hot Topic. Dont *just* cater to the parent/kid dynamic.

I know, I know...CEC has a good thing going business model wise, and in this unstable economy why risk rocking the waters. Im just saying, I see a LOT of potential for expansion past boasting of "500 stores".

I love the CEC brand/history like people love Disney or Looney Tunes or what have you, and it's sad to see them doing so well but almost seeming to be boxed in from their true potential.
(I also want to see a big company partner with CEI/Aaron for something innovative)
