Does anyone remember the 1970's PBS Kids show "The Electric Company" that taught kids to learn how to read with words and phonics and made Morgan Freeman and Rita Moreno stars? There's now a 4 DVD set called "The Best of The Electric Company".

Yeah I remember that. it came on after Sesame Street and had Spider Man on it. It was an educational program for kids just outside of the age range of Sesame Street. There was also another show that came on after that called Square One and it was an educational show strictly based on math.

OOOOOOOOO!!!! I wasn't there at the time, but have seen eps and LOVE this show!!! It was even spoofed on Family Guy once!!! Also in the late 70s/early 80s, Intellevision had a video game of it. If only I had the money...this set would be mine!!!

I know Barnes and Noble stores sell The Best of the Electric Company DVD set in their music CD and movie DVD departments. You can also try the "Geoffrey's Box Office" section of videotapes and DVD's at most Toys R Us stores.

One segment of this show was two sillouttes of people that would say different vowel and consanant sounds. The words would sort of fly out of their mouths as they said them and it would show how they fit together. It was a phonics lesson basically. I'm not a huge No Doubt fan but there is a video where Gwen and I think the bass player sort of parody this. I think the song is called "Hey Baby."

That's my favorite segment on that show. The background music is so funky....haha

The Electric Company always kind of creeped me out a little bit. I have seen episodes on Noggin back around 2001, mostly the end of them before Sesame Street Unpaved came on(anyone remember this 'series' covering SS episodes 1969-1989?).

Hey guys, that sillouette part was my fave too! I'm fairly easy to please. What's funny is I use to watch it in reruns in the 80's, and a few years ago I saw it on Noggin....I had totally forgotten about the sillouettes...until I saw that segment again!!! Then it all came back to me....it's funny how things you haven't seen in years will come back to you like that...
Also, I swear, when I saw it on Noggin, there was a segment where one of the guys was putting huge letters together to form words....and I swear there was a very naughty word spelled out in the background!
