I once saw a classic RAE, and at the base of the stage was a pinkish box that said "sing along with billy bob" and there was a projection screen showing the words. How did that work? Did it use RAE showtapes?

I vaguely remember what you are talking about. I do remember the projection screen. I'm thinking maybe this was used with the Brock controller where Billy Bob was manually controlled. I'm not sure beyond that.

I think it was referred to somewhere as RAE karaoke.

Do you remember where this was at? If it's the box in the photo above, then it was from a 'newer' classic show, or one that was given upgrades anyway. CEI offered several different options with the sale of classic RAEs in the 1990s.

As to how it ran, it was probably off VHS or ADAT... I have a few showtapes made by CEI that are on VHS and some of the songs have video with them. The karaoke was probably run in the same fashion, but there's probably someone out there who knows better than me on this one.

I do remember there was an actual projection screen that lowered when the center stage curtains closed and it would show cartoons. I remember one time Billy Bob was playing with it and he said "The screen can go up and the screen can go down" and the manager yelled at him over the PA for playing with the screen. The curtains were not open at this time but it was when they had interactive Billy Bob.

that above pic was from a classic show? I remember it normal billy bob stage. I don't remember where it was at. What do you mean by ADAT?

No that photo above is of a New Rock-afire show, I was just talking about that pink box in front of the kids. That (along with parts of that above photo like the show selector panel) can be added to the classic show as well.

Not exactly sure on the ADAT system, only that it's a way CEI uses to control shows... I was supposed to get one of these with my show that I purchased a few years back but it's still part of the deal I'm waiting to finalize with Aaron. It's digital but runs off analog tapes. I don't know that much about it personally, but here's a page about it on Wiki -

so did the options like the show selector and karaoke need special showtapes to run? I remember just the normal show running, and the words on a projection screen.

I would love to see that. But too bad I didn't
