Does anyone know if these backgrounds were actually used? I never knew slightly different versions of RAE backgrounds existed!!! just take a look behind duke for example
On a side note,

Did the Cosmic Combo become the Moon Rockers?

There were probably several different backgrounds used - especially in the early years. There's 2 or 3 different insides to the Smitty's garage, several different tree props (example - in Mitzi's Colander photo there's a little critter on the 'moon' trees behind her - most don't have this).
Most of this was probably just alterations in productions. I think after a year or two of producing the shows, CEI had them pretty well standardized by 1983 when the last ones were made. On those early photos it's not just the backgrounds that are different... all of the faces are different sculps as is the RAE signage.
There's so many differences though, it would take an eye even keener than mine to notice them all. When I was at CEI recently there were multiple versions of characters in the mold room... like Rolfe 1, 2, and 3. There were at least 3 Looney Bird face sculpts and so on. Probably 4 or 5 alternate sculpts for characters like Beach Bear. I'm sure some of the alterations are as slight as having one less eyebrow wrinkle or crease around the mouth.
Also when I was picking out my 'moon' trees, the stack on the wall had at least 2 different paint versions - the big flower behind Mitzi's shoulder came in either yellow or white. ;)

Keep in mind this stuff was more or less hand made so there are definately going to be background differences. I suspect that they simplified the background later on. That brocure you are showing is of one of the earliest versions. Look how complex it is in detail. It just makes sense they made it a little easier to mass produce.

I know, I know!
I'm about halfway through writing up the next Bulletin. It's a long and neat story, which is hard to write up over and over. That's the only reason I've been mum on the subject. 8)
Also back to your original post, it's very possible that the cosmic combo evolved into the Moon Rockers... I'm not so sure that they even made a prototype of the 'combo' (which is probably why there's only a concept drawing in that brochure). However, in the mold room at CEI, I thought I saw some molds or plugs for some of the characters in that Jungle stage.
